Reviews for the Town Star
Efficient staff, fab boat, easy to drive. The only negatives were the extortionate costs for the extras & the fact that although the boat couldn't be collected until 16.30 it had to be back at 09.30!
Excellant little boat. Easy to drive & the maps given to us were really helpfull.

Sailed Carrick-Portumna and back, including a detour up the Suck to Ballinasloe.
Fine, I know the boat well from previous trips. The throttle stuck at one point but popped into Emerald Star in Portumna, and they fixed it promptly.
We started off going up the waterway towards Belturbot but decided to stay in the river where navigation was less arduous and there appeared to be more wildlife. We got as far as Boyle on Lough Key and spent two nights at the Lough Key Forest Park
The Town Star could hardly have been better for my wife and me. There was more than enough space for the two of us, the galley allowed us to prepare meals amost as easily as at home and the furnace kept us cosy even though it was chilly in April when we cruised. We were astonished at how little fuel she used (about 20 litres in four days). She was quite slow but we wouldn't have gone faster even if there had been more power.
The staff at the centre and on the phone were very pleasant and helpful, our only complaint is when we rang initially they gave us a price in sterling, and as we were booking for a group we quoted this price to the group assuming it was euros. But when we went back to book the price was higher ie euros. Very annoying and made us look stupid with the group. Carrick is based in Ireland and therefor the price quoted should be in euros.

It was our first ever cruise so we were a bit nervous. Fortunately we got excellent instructions from the staff in Portumna base. We cruised downriver and spent the night in Terryglass. The following morning we headed to the Ballina, explored the town and had lunch before heading up the lake again to moor for the night in Mountshannon. The next day we headed off to Dromineer and then moored in Garrykennedy. Our last day was spent exploring Portumna castle before heading back to base.
The town star was small but perfect for our party of two and is a great boat for beginners. A bit cold at night but plenty of blankets were provided. Next time a boat with on shore power hookup would be ideal, but having said that, we probably were a little conservative with the power usage : i think the batteries actually had more juice than we thought.
