Reviews for the The Canal du Midi Cruise
Having to wait on five separate occasions for the engineer to come and attend to a breakdown of the boat.
The canal and the scenery are beautiful, and the towns and villages charming. There was however a great deal of traffic on the canal and waiting time to get through 45 locks in 6 days took the edge off the charm, to say nothing of the hours wasted waiting for engineers to arrive.
Lovely canal, interesting locks and friendly lock keepers. Good time of year - weather good, canal not busy. Boat very nice, and in very good nick. Very little hassle. Staff friendly, and competent. Beautiful little towns close to the canal. Nice to cycle along the canal - rent the cycles, which were good for rentals.
Fresh baguettes every morning, lovely plane trees all the way. Enjoyed the very old, but well maintained locks. Carcassone old walled city marvelous. French people very friendly and helpful - lift back to boat from supermarket in Castelnaudery in shop's van. Still fruit on trees and grapes on vines, with harvesting.
Cycle to villages, meet other boaties, sightseeing and great eating.
We cruised from Homps to Castelnaudery with 47 locks along the way. Stopping to view the smaller towns of La Redorte, Marseillette, Trebes and Castelnaudery was a treat...and of course stocking up on croissants and local specialties! The real gem was Carcasonne, with an amazing medieval city to explore. We also enjoyed spending a night next to the canal between towns and dining al fresco (with dinner made on the BBQ).
I would recommend the route from Homps to Carcassonne and then Castelnaudery itself to experience the towns of Languedoc, and of course the locks and the Canal itself. The kids enjoyed cycling on the well maintained paths. From Carcasonne to Castelnaudery the scenery and towns were not as great.
A week in the company of good friends on a well-equipped boat in terrible weather.
Apart from the company of friends, the most enjoyable activity was riding our bikes into nearby villages along the way when the rain lightened off. I cannot not provide a single informative response to the following question as the cruising area was superb, whereas our holiday was spoiled somewhat by the persistent bad weather.

Dear Jayqueue, We certainly hope the weather is better on next year's charter, but the good friends are just as enjoyable.
