The Canal du Midi Cruise

Canal du Midi, France

Reviews for the The Canal du Midi Cruise

Every moment was memorable, from succeeding the locks to being enveloped in branches, just fun all the way. We met many like minded people and enjoyed their company en route. Carcassone and Homps were 2 of our favourite stays.b
We would always recommend going in one direction and not doing a return cruise, new things to see everyday. Those we met that were returning regretted not doing a one way.

A fantastic trip from castelnaudry to homps. A week was more than enough time to cover this distance. We travelled at the end of may (during english half term), and the canal was very quiet, allowing us to get quickly through locks. Journey could therefore take longer during the busy season. We were hampered by bad weather but still had the most fabulous time. The sun of course would have made it perfect!
Take a day in carcassone. It's old city is amazing.

Picked up the boat in Castelnaudary and dropped it off in Homps. We went further than Homps so we could experience "upstream locking" as well. All in all 56 locks with no problems. Bow thruster was a blessing especially as we had significants winds. The nimbler one highlight was without a doubt Carcisonne and La Cite. Fantastic views, wonderful food and great boaters to hang around.
See above for the singular highlight. Castelnaudary itself was also quite wonderful and the cassoulet was exceptional. Great wines and very reasonable if not just cheap. The other experience we thoroughly enjoyed besides wonderful scenary was the experience of the locks. The lockeepers were engaging and other boaters from Australia, Canada, UK and the Netherlands going through the locks made for great fun. The only exception to that was some bull dog Germans with no boating experience let alone good manners.

It was one of the best vacations I ever had, very relaxing and enjoyable. September in South France has just perfect weather, smell of grapes and freshly made wine.
Beautiful villages along the canal have a lot of history, small of coffee and French pastries in the morning - what could be more delicious! Carcassonne takes at least two days to walk around and inquire the history about the place and region.
