Reviews for the The Lakeland Cruise
Our cruise visited Heeg, Stavoren, Workum, Bolsward, Ijlst and Sneek. Most memorable were the beautiful tall masted ships at Stavoren and views out over the Ijsselmeer, the historic town square and Huisman art museum at Workum, and many more sites. The wide open skies, beautifully tended villages, towns and gardens and outstanding wildlife/wildfowl.
Highly recommended Jopie Huisman art museum at Workum, the market and town centre at Bolsward, the 'De Rat' windmill tour and lunch at Ijlst and all the entertainment at Sneek along with the historic Waterspoort.
I've always liked going to the Netherlands. I've found the people there more educated, civilised and pleasant than anywhere else - including the UK. I was worried that it would prove too developed, making it impossible to 'get away from it all' on this cruise; but I needn't've worried, after the weekend pretty and quiet backwaters were everywhere. English is common, but Flemish surpisingly easy to comprehend.
We followed the suggested 7 day route. De Alde Feanen National Park was nice and towards the end we had a little time to spare so we moored at a Braandemeer Nature Reserve. I think I preferred the second part of the week more that the first, so you might want to slim down the time you spend near the coast.
