Writing in the Guardian, Patrick Barkham said it is difficult to find a less crowded spot in the south of England than the Norfolk Broads.
And he pointed out that with the trend for holidaying at home on the increase, the UK's "bog-standard" tourist hotspots are likely to get busy this summer.
By contrast, the Broads will be tranquil and free from the hustle and bustle that families may be desperate to escape on their break.
"From its wide skies to vast, sandy, windswept beaches, Norfolk bequeaths you that most valuable and elusive thing in our crushed, hectic modern lives - a sense of space," Mr Barkham remarked.
He recommended enjoying a cruise though various nature reserves and hunting down the rare swallowtail butterfly before enjoying a pub lunch by the water.
In a recent article for the Independent journalist Michael McCarthy said it is worth visiting the Norfolk Broads simply to catch a glimpse of the swallowtail butterfly, which he described as "magnificent" and "exotically-coloured".
Boating holidays in the Norfolk Broads are available from the cruise base at Wroxham.
