The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is launching its Big Garden Birdwatch in the new year and encouraging boaters to take part.
Those booking River Thames boat breaks for the spring and summer months will miss the event, which is taking place on the last two days of January, but that's not to say they can't conduct their own birdwatching activities.
Mute swans, great crested grebes, Canada geese, grey herons and moorhens are just a few of the many bird species families may spot along the River Thames.
The RSBP said boating holidaymakers who want to get a closer look at the birds could hang a feeder on their boat to tempt them onto the deck.
Boating holidays on the River Thames are available from the cruise bases at Benson and Chertsey.
