The municipality is home to the Council of Europe and the European Parliament, as well as the European Court of Human Rights.
All three of the buildings can be viewed from outside and are impressive structures in their own right.
But those who have a keen interest in the workings of the European Union could make an appointment to take a look inside.
Visits to the Council of Europe are available by appointment in writing or by telephone, as are trips to the European Parliament.
Sessions in the European Court of Human Rights are public, although visits inside the building at other times are not allowed.
A number of other European organisations also possess head offices in Strasbourg, including the European Science Foundation and the Assembly of European Regions.
Families can visit the city during a boating holiday in Alsace-Lorraine. Cruises are available from the bases at Hesse, Boofzheim and Saarbrucken.
Other popular sights and attractions within Strasbourg include the city's gothic cathedral and its Petite France quarter.
