According to the Independent, a museum devoted to the comic has been opened in the town, housing more than 110,000 magazines and comic books and over 8,000 original drawings.
Visitors will be able to see copies of famous French and Belgian comic strips, including Tintin and Asterix, as well as American creations such as Superman and Peanuts.
Ambroise Lassalle, director of the museum, said the collection celebrates the "fun side" of comic books, which are enjoyed by both children and adults.
"But we also want to explain and to celebrate the rich history of comic books and show why they have been recognised in the last 20 years as a separate and legitimate art form," he remarked.
Families can stop off in Angouleme to visit the museum during a boating holiday in Charente, departing from the marina at Jarnac. They could also take a tour of the 12th century Cathedral of St Pierre in the town.
