Take a river Lot boat trip and enjoy fine French wine

Wednesday 25 November 2009

Holidaymakers exploring the quaint vineyards around the river Lot while on a France boating trip will find delicious wines of excellent vintage.

That is according to a travel writer and wine expert who recounts in the Irish Times a recent trip he took to the Chateau Eugenie vineyard just west of Cahors.

Peter Murtagh explained how grapes produced in the region taste "absolutely delicious" and make even better local wines.

"It is hard to understand how this stony, boney and parched earth of sun-bleached limestone can produce fruit of such succulence. But it does; year after year," he said.

Highlighting the history of the region, the Chateau's owner Jean Couture told the travel writer how the 'black wines' of Cahors have been highly regarded across France since the 12th century.

At which time the region produced more than four times the quantity of wine that it does today.

Peter the Great of Russia was among the many admirers of the region's fine wines, and the Cuvee Pierre le Grand is named after the famous tsar.

Those wishing to explore the river Lot and its surroundings while on a France boating trip Douelle an visit Luzech and Cregols as well as Cahors.
