In an article for the Hill Country Times, travel journalist Patricia Woeber said the scenic beauty of the valleys and gorges along the river "dazzles" nature lovers.
History buffs are fascinated by the area's rich past, while art lovers enjoy its ancient architecture, she added.
Just as in a garden, a path should lead through a series of sensory experiences and that's what happens along the Lot River," she remarked.
Ms Woeber said holidaymakers will pass through picturesque medieval villages and towns, some of which are perched on cliffs above the river banks.
One of these is the "charming" St-Cirq-Lapopie, which is classed as one of the most beautiful villages in France.
Here, visitors can explore "flower-bedecked" streets and alleyways, which wind their way among medieval homes, with wild plants clinging to the old stones.
Boating holidays on the River Lot are available from the base at Douelle.
Other highlights of a boat break in the region may include a trip to the Pech-Merle Caves to see some amazing prehistoric cave drawings.
