In an article for the Telegraph, Michael Simpkins described France as an "enchanted land" that boasts "endless sunny days and starlit nights".
He said it is also home to "innumerable ravishing vistas" and medieval towns, which families could visit during a boating holiday in the country.
A cruise along the Canal du Midi could be a great opportunity to explore what France has to offer in terms of history and beautiful scenery.
Holidaymakers can head to the walled city of Carcassonne, which Clare Hickie, in a recent article for the Liverpool Daily Post, described as "simply gorgeous".
"With its towers and turrets, no wonder it is thought Walt Disney came up with the idea of Cinderella's castle after visiting here," she stated.
Boating holidays on the Canal du Midi are available from the cruise bases at Castelnaudary, Trebes, Homps and Port Cassafieres.
