See Languedoc in bloom on the Canal du Midi

Thursday 25 June 2009

Families cruising along the Canal du Midi on a boating holiday in France this summer can see the Languedoc region in full bloom.

An article in the Telegraph newspaper names the Canal du Midi as one of Europe's most tranquil waterways for a boat break.

It states that those cruising the canal - which has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site - will pass "poppy and sunflower fields along tree-lined waterways".

The Canal du Midi also flows alongside the historic walled town of Carcassonne, where tourists can find a true piece of French history.

Family-friendly beaches can also be found along the way, the article points out.

Indeed, holiday makers could spend time at Port la Nouvelle in Narbonne exploring the beaches and sampling local seafood.

Boating holidays on the Canal du Midi are available from the bases at Castelnaudary, Trebes, Homps and Port Cassafieres.

Writing in the Daily Mail recently, travel journalist Malcolm Herdman said a Canal du Midi cruise makes for a perfect family holiday.

He also commented on the beautiful blooms, in particular the fields full of sunflowers, that he passed on his way along the waterways.
