Writing for Examiner.com, journalist Sharon Holton-Schmitt said attractions such as the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin Wall make the German metropolis worth a visit.
She said there are also a number of sites that visitors can access for free, such as the Reichstag Parliament, the Gendarmenmarkt and the Potsdamer Platz.
Traditional German cuisine is also a highlight during a trip to Berlin, with curry wurst, liver and onions with apples and jelly-filled donuts known as Berliners all on the menu.
Families can visit Berlin during a boating holiday in Germany. Cruises are available from the bases at Marina Wolfsbruch, Jabel and Potsdam.
Those enjoying their break in August could also take in the spectacular views in Potsdam during Castles Night when the city's Baroque fortresses are illuminated using atmospheric lighting.
