Writing for the Canwest News Service, Bill Robertson said the canals are used for a variety of purposes, from transporting goods to enjoying boating holidays.
Indeed, he said the waterways are filled with people "having a jolly good old time" talking, laughing and playing guitars on their boats.
"Often at night I'd hear tipsy flotillas of happy sounds putt-putting down the waterway," Mr Robertson wrote.
And he said that once moored up, there are plenty of things to do and see in Amsterdam, including the Van Gogh Museum and the house of Anne Frank.
Locals are friendly and there is an easygoing attitude that permeates the city, added Mr Robertson, pointing out that the multitude of cafes, bakeries and restaurants also make the city a pleasurable destination for food lovers.
Those heading to Amsterdam at the end of the month could join in the celebrations on Queen's Day, when revellers hold parties in the streets and on the canals to celebrate the birthday of the Dutch Queen Mother on April 30th.
Boating holidays in Holland are available from the bases at Strand Horst and Sneek.
