Walk the Leitrim Way on an Ireland boating holiday

Monday 29 June 2009

Those heading off on boating holidays in Ireland and eager to put on their walking boots and enjoy the countryside could follow the Leitrim Way.

According to Discover Ireland, the walk begins at Carrick-on-Shannon and passes through a wide variety of different landscape features.

Tourists start at the east shore of Lough Allen before walking the 30 miles to the upland wilderness of Barlear.

The longest stage of the walk is between Dowra and Manorhamilton - a distance of around 20 miles.

However, those who prefer a shorter walk could complete a small part of the route and map out their own way back.

There are a wide variety of way-marked trails and mapped walks in Ireland suitable for all ages and abilities. Families could explore the country on foot during a boating holiday.

Cruises in Ireland are available from the marinas at Carrick-on-Shannon, Belturbet and Portumna.

Discover Ireland claims the country's varied landscape is ideal for both walking and cycling.
