Tourists can moor up close to the city and watch all the action as amateur rowers and local boatsmen gather in St Mark's Basin.
Competitors follow a 30-kilometre route along the waterways, passing the island of Burano and travelling along the Grand Canal for the final stretch.
The organisers of the event describe it as "an act of love for Venice and its waters, for its lagoon and its islands, for rowing and its boats".
This year, the Vogalonga boat race will take place on May 31st. Boating holidays in Italy are available from the bases at Casier and Porto Levante.
Also taking place on May 31st is the Raid Pavia-Venezia - a speedboat competition that sees competitors traverse 384 kilometres of water from Pavia to Venice.
Families could catch the boats coming in while they take in the sights of the Vogalonga race.
