Don't miss Venice's lesser-known attractions

Sunday 26 April 2009

While families spending time in Venice should visit some of the city's most famous landmarks, they should also make sure they explore some of its lesser known attractions, it has been claimed.

Writing for WA Today, travel journalist Valerie Waterhouse said there are a number of hidden treasures waiting to be discovered in Venice.

Of course, tourists should not skip the "tried-and-true" during their break, as legendary landmarks such as the 14th-century Doge's Palace and the Rialto Bridge should always be on the itinerary.

However, Ms Waterhouse points out that by following the well-trodden paths of the vast majority of holidaymakers who visit the city, tourists may miss out on some real Venetian experiences.

She recommends a visit to the Museo della Fondazione Querini Stampalia, which houses a collection of paintings by Pietro Longhi.

Tourists should also spend a day on the island of Murano, where they can find numerous small boutiques selling delicate glasswares.

Families can visit Venice and Murano during a boating holiday in Italy. Cruises are available from the bases at Casier and Porto Levante.

Writing in the Royal Gazette recently, journalist Robyn Skinner said Venice is a place that everyone should visit in their lifetime.
