Everyone 'has to visit' Venice

Saturday 11 April 2009

Venice is a place that everyone should visit during their lifetime, according to one travel journalist who spent two days in the Italian city.

Writing in the Royal Gazette, Robyn Skinner said Venice is a great place for tourists to test their navigational skills by exploring the maze of streets and waterways.

She described the Rialto Bridge as a "must see" Venetian landmark and also recommended a visit to the Basilica di San Marco, which boasts "beautiful" mosaics and a "fantastic" view of the piazza from the balcony.

During her holiday, Ms Skinner also spent time on the island of Murano, where she watched glass blowers at work making a variety of intricate ornaments.

Families enjoying boating holidays in and around Venice can see all of this and more as they cruise along the city's famous canal network.

Those arriving at the end of May could catch the Vogalonga boat race on the 31st, which sees hundreds of rowers gather in St Mark's Basin before racing to the island of Burano and back along the Grand Canal.

Boating holidays in Italy are available from the bases at Casier and Porto Levante.
