Queen visits Scottish Highlands

Tuesday 30 June 2009

The Queen paid a visit to the Scottish Highlands recently to see the new Glendoe hydro power scheme above Loch Ness.

Located near Fort Augustus, the project is capable of generating enough electricity to power 250,000 homes, the BBC reports.

It works by turning rainfall into hydro energy and has been called Eliza Jane by local schoolchildren who were asked to think of a name.

During her time in Scotland, the Queen also took a tour of the Culloden Battlefield, which was the site of the Jacobite defeat of 1746.

Afterwards she took a look inside the Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre, which is situated on Culloden Moor in Inverness.

Families could retrace the Queen's visit to the Highlands during a boating holiday in Scotland, visiting both sites. Cruises are available from the base at Laggan.

As well as Fort Augustus and Inverness, holidaymakers can also stop off in some of the smaller villages along the Caledonian Canal, or visit Drumnadrochit near Loch Ness to take part in some monster spotting activities.
