Useful information

A bit of background

Truly an outstanding feat of engineering when completed in 1694, the main course of the Canal du Midi runs 240 kilometres (150 miles). Its very name is imbued with resonance—the canal of two seas—since its network of waterways connects the Atlantic to the Mediterranean and once served as a major trade route.

Its designer, Pierre-Paul Riquet, created a work of art with aqueducts, bridges, 91 locks and a tunnel. More than 42,000 plane trees line its often-shaded banks!

Canal du Midi boating holidays present an opportunity to experience this fabulous waterway firsthand with your family and friends, inviting you to travel at a pace that lets you get to meet the people and relax amidst stunning natural beauty. Canal du Midi holidays are amongst our most popular offerings, and with so many bases to choose from there’s a perfect cruise for you!

As with many great canals, the idea to build the Canal du Midi had been around a long time. In 1516, King Francis I hired Leonardo da Vinci to survey a route. When Pierre-Paul Riquet got going in 1667, one problem was how to lift boats over the 190-metre (620-foot) heights at Naurouze. Reservoirs and dams were built. You’ll see neoclassical elements in many structures on your Canal du Midi holiday! In 1996, the canal became a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Canal du Midi is easy to navigate and ideal for beginners.

Tips : If you are cruising down to Béziers, consider mooring at the top or bottom of the locks of Fonsérannes if you want to walk or cycle into Béziers for sightseeing.

Locks are fully automatic, manned and free of charge.

Opening hours:

  • During the busy summer season locks are open 09:00-19:00 (7:00 p.m.).
  • Locks are closed for lunch between 12:30-13:30 (1:30 p.m.).

Public holidays: Locks are closed on some public holidays : 1st May & 1st Nov.

Please note that the locks can get busy in peak season. Please also note that the Fonsérannes staircase has specific opening hours for rising vs down navigation

Moorings are plentiful on the Canal du Midi, most of them are offering electricity and water refill for a small charge.

You could also moor where you want to along the canal thanks to the ropes and spikes on-board your boat. Please do not cross the pathway with the ropes in order to allow the passage of walkers and cyclists.

We were sent out in a boat with a broken water gauge and ultimately discovered we were sent with no water in the tank. When we called for help it took 9 hours to return our call for service, and then we were told a technician would come and no one did. When we finally got to a Le Boat port, we were told there was no room for us. We finally found a water tap to fill up, but the coupling didn't fit and it took over an hour or holding the hose to the tap by hand to get only half a tank of water. In addition, when we were sold the trip, we weren't informed of the number of locks we would have to pass through. With only two people on board the trip was far more physically difficult then we had expected. RAther than a leisure vacation it felt like a working vacation. The people booking the boats should be more informed of the difficultly level of the trip. The actual boat was beautiful and well appointed. Our beginning provisions were just what we needed and made it much easier to get started

The boat was in good condition, the documentation were excellent, External arrangements i.e. arrangements for taxi's, train schedules etc were also excellent. The facilities at Port Cessafires where we picked up the boat were very good, but the toilet and shower facilities at Castelnaudary were poor and not really in a useable shape. Excellent value for money - I can recommend a boat tour on the Canals in France for a family holiday. Just leave a few days free om the boat for more sightseeing

The reception was staffed by some excellent people and they did a good job showing us around the boat. The engineers who came out to fix a small defect were also very good. The boat was well suited to our needs and was very well behaved! Great Staff who helped us a lot

Probably the best family holiday we have ever had. Picking up the boat was easier than I had anticipated, our briefing was excellent and all the staff made sure we left with smiles on our faces. A perfect family holiday.

From the ease of booking, through making changes to teh booking and then collection and dropping off the boat, everything went very smoothly and all staffer helpful. informative and friendly. The Le Boat experience could be summed up as just very easy going. The boat itself was as described, comfortable with al the amenities required. Would we go again? Yes is the easy answer. One slight gripe was that the trip we went on was a one-way trip, so why put on an extra charge for one-way? surely incorporate this into the start price, it's not as if going only one-way is an option on a one-way trip. It just leaves a little sour taste. Easy-going, no problems and very relaxing. Some beautiful towns and spectacular scenery.
