Reviews for the The Triple Nations Long Break
We loved both the Moselle and the Sarre(Saar)...but did find that cruising on these big rivers (and the Marne/Rhine Canal) is a bit more challenging than our previous cruise (on the Canal du Midi). Because you can't stop just anywhere, more planning is required; the locks are big but manageable; and the other traffic is commercial barges with places to go. Our most memorable experiences are about the people we met, friendly folks who helped us is so many small ways.
Favorite places on this trip: Metz, Place Stanislas in Nancy, Saarburg (climb up to former Butter Market, just above the water fall, at least...the castle is even higher...don't miss the bell foundry, right at river level), Sarreguemines (the faience museum and the bakeries). We love to shop locally, prepare meals on board with what's available in the markets and bakeries/pastry shops, and drink local beers and wines. The covered market in Metz is fabulous; other good shopping towns for us included Einville-au-Jard, Remich, Sarreguemines, Varangeville, and Wasserbillig (not on Sunday afternoon), and the weekly market in Pompey (morning only) was just what we needed.
